It may be hard to imagine now, but before INFINITI arrived on the scene in 1985, there was nothing quite like it. To be sure, luxury cars have long featured high-performance engines and exceptional handling characteristics. Still, never before had a car marquee been established with no intention other than to create one of the world’s most exhilarating driving machines—and that is precisely what INFINITI set out to do from the very beginning.
In fact, the three letters chosen for its name—chosen from a list of more than 200 possibilities — meant “infinite” (or unlimited) and “forward motion,” reflecting just what INFINITI has always been about: forward-thinking and advancement in automotive performance.
INFINITI Through the Years
1. The Eighties
In the late 80s, consumers were introduced to human-centric performance luxury cars. In 1989, the brand launched with 51 dealers in the United States with two models—the Q45 and the M30. Then, in 1990, the G20 was introduced.
2. The Nineties
In 1995, the VQ engine was introduced optimized for power, fuel consumption, and torque. The VQ engine is one of the World’s 10 best engines, and today, it is the predecessor of the INFINITI Twin Turbo V6 engine.
3. The Early 2000s
In the new millennium, the brand introduced the RearView Monitor in 2001 and the INFINITI Voice Recognition in 2002. The RearView Monitor uses external cameras, while the voice recognition software gives drivers the chance to command their vehicle without the need to take their hands off the wheel.
By 2003, INFINITI launched the G35 Sport Sedan and Coupe and was part of the Car and Driver’s Ten Best Cars list. Indeed, the early 2000s were the best years the company has had so far.
4. The Mid-2000s
That didn’t stop the company from pioneering innovations; in 2007, they launched the first Around View Monitor and the Lane Departure Prevention system. The Around View Monitor changed the parking experience, making it easier to manoeuvre the vehicle in and out of tight spaces. On the other hand, the Lane Departure System alerts drivers if they are about to drift into a neighbouring lane.
5. 2010 and Beyond
By 2010, they introduced the first Blind Spot Intervention System that senses other vehicles in neighbouring lanes and automatically applies in the brakes when necessary. Another first for the world came from INFINITI with the first-ever Backup Collision Intervention that detects what a driver may miss when reversing.
After over 20 years, they released the VC-Turbo, the world’s first production variable compression ratio engine. This is one of the most technologically advanced engines that gives drivers the efficiency of four cylinders with a performance similar to a larger engine.
